Chamaecyparis thyoides

Atlantic White  Cedar is one of six  species of Chamaecyparis, and one of four species native to the Atlantic coast of North America.  The Atlantic White Cedar is an evergreen coniferous tree that can be identified by various characteristics. Blue-green fan-like foliage,  cone-shaped trees stand an average of 20-28 meters tall. Small blue cones can be found along the branches and in spring red-yellow flowers are produced. Seedlings mature after 5-7 months and grow on average about 12 inches per year.

They are commonly found in the Chesapeake region including Maryland, Virginia and Delaware in wet, marshy coastal areas. Due to urban development the population of these trees has decreased. Atlantic White Cedar bogs or swamps serve as ideal coastal buffer zones and flood control areas. Their acidic soils provide unique habitat for specialized organisms and symbiotic relationships which create a productive ecosystem.

WHO WE ARE

Atlantic White Cedar Conservation is a restoration-landscape company established in 2011.  Our goal is to restore this  threatened  species  to help establish a thriving population again. We grow the trees from seeds which are collected locally in the Delmarva area including Maryland, Virginia and Delaware. Our nursery is located in the Annapolis, MD area and open by appointment only.

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY OUR TREES

It is our goal to help propagate and establish young Atlantic white cedars, which are a critical component of fresh water wetlands.  Fresh water wetlands along the Atlantic coast of the United States are in much need of restoration  to create and preserve a  healthier environment.  There are many native plants that make a fresh water wetland environment. We grow the  Atlantic white cedar  because it is the dominant plant of this ecosystem and more importantly, because it is globally threatened.

We pride ourselves in the quality of trees we produce by  collecting our seeds from local genotypes. This ensures the trees grown are well adapted to the area and prepared for a long thriving life.   The cedar seed is tiny, difficult to collect, and notorious for delayed germination (USDA 1974) and cuttings are easy to collect and root. Despite this and unlike other tree restoration companies,  we  continue to start our trees from seedlings enhancing the product quality. This way, no two trees are exactly alike and pathogens are less likely to affect the trees which could decimate single-clone populations.
